By reading some opinions here and there, I noted Inspector Perez is a character sometimes accused of indolence. I think that maybe british mood of Inspector and writers is not so clear. To be strictly precise in investigation is typical of british Inspector and distinguishes them from others too slooppy detectives. What is your opinion about it?
I don’t think Jimmy Perez is indolent or lazy, but he is a kind and compassionate man who sometimes becomes too involved with his cases. Clearly he’s not a macho man, like the detectives in some US thrillers. He works by the rules. I’m not sure if that’s a particularly British trait.

Shetland Island and Scotland in general, remind me  (not only because of climate) of dark gothic setti gas, that fit very well to your novels. How did you  choose the location to set your stories?
I chose Shetland and Northumberland as settings because those are places that I know well. Both are bleak and beautiful landscapes. I love the contrast between the empty spaces and low horizons and the secrets hidden beneath the surface.

In Red Bones reader is guided in the described setting by your writing and feel the same anxiety of the characters in the book. Is it “simply” your writing style or in this novel you wanted to increase the fear felt by reader?
I like writing from different points of view so the reader sees the world through different characters’ eyes and shares their emotions. Of course it heightens tension when the person is in danger. Because we’re inside the character’s head we feel that danger too.

You cooperate with other writers so to promote crime fiction.  Do you think crime fiction an understimated literary genre? Or is it devalued by the acting of people whose only aim is marketing?
Some people dismiss crime novels, but there’s a huge variety of writing within the genre now and some fine young writers have written very good books recently. The most important thing to me is to write the best book that I can. I want to entertain my readers, but I hope to make them think too. Crime writers are generally supportive and friendly people, perhaps because we don’t take ourselves too seriously.

Always basing on thriller rules, are your books totally creations of your immagination or are inspired by true events?  By the way thriller is a kind a mirror of crime beat…
I don’t base my books on real crime, but they might be triggered by overheard snatches of conversation or people I meet. A thriller will never be a mirror to a real police investigation – in real life there’s more detailed and boring work and usually things happen more slowly. However, we might help the reader to understand some of the circumstances that lie behind the crime.

How did you find out your passion for writing, particolarly for writing thrillers? Have you been inspired by some author?
I’ve always been a passionate reader and traditional detective stories were my comfort reading as a child. It makes sense to write the sort of book I would enjoy reading myself.

Leggo molti thriller nordici.
Usual Thrillernord’s question: do you know nordic thriller?
I read a lot of Nordic crime. I started with Henning Mankell like many other readers, but I’m particularly fascinated by contemporary Icelandic writers.
